Citizenship rules can change and small factual differences matter. Use the official links below before filing or making a legal decision.

01

The two-part passing rule

The standard test has 20 computer-based multiple-choice questions and lasts 45 minutes. A passing result requires at least 15 correct answers overall and all five Australian values questions correct.

A score of 19/20 can therefore still fail if the missed question is one of the five values questions. CitizenReady enforces this rule in both random and numbered Australian mock tests.

02

Who normally sits the test

Most citizenship-by-conferral applicants aged 18 through 59 on the day Home Affairs receives the application sit the test after their identity is confirmed.

Applicants aged 17 or younger or 60 or older generally do not sit it. Defined permanent incapacity, significant hearing, speech or sight impairment, stateless birth in Australia and a small number of statutory categories can also remove the standard-test requirement; an interview may still occur.

03

Use Our Common Bond as the source of truth

The testable section of Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond contains the knowledge needed for the test. It covers Australia and its people, democratic beliefs, rights and liberties, government and law, and Australian values.

The test itself is English only. Home Affairs provides the booklet in 40 community languages to support study, plus an official practice test, podcast and preparation video. The Department says it does not endorse paid external apps or courses.

  • Read the English testable section even if you first study a translated booklet.
  • Take the official Home Affairs sample test.
  • Review every Australian values statement carefully.
  • Treat CitizenReady as supplemental independent practice, not an official bank.

04

If you do not pass

Not passing does not affect the person's visa and there is no extra test fee; Home Affairs can arrange another appointment. The application may be refused after three unsuccessful appointments.

Follow the appointment letter and current Home Affairs rules. Electronic devices, notes, outside help and communication with other candidates are prohibited.

05

Assisted testing and accessibility

An eligible Assisted Test provides 90 minutes and help using the computer or understanding test procedure. It does not lower the required knowledge or values score.

Raise disability and access needs with Home Affairs using the process for the appointment rather than assuming an exemption.
