Citizenship rules can change and small factual differences matter. Use the official links below before filing or making a legal decision.
01
Who takes the 2025 civics test?
USCIS generally administers the 2025 civics test to applicants who filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. Applicants who filed before that date generally take the 2008 version. Always confirm the version shown in your USCIS materials.
02
How the oral test is administered
An officer asks up to 20 questions orally from the 128-question bank. The test ends when the applicant answers 12 correctly or answers 9 incorrectly. It is not multiple choice at the interview.
CitizenReady’s numbered U.S. mocks use an oral self-grade flow. The separate study centre also offers answer-choice drills for learning, while oral-recall mode hides choices, reads the prompt and lets you compare your response with every accepted USCIS answer.
03
Current and location-dependent answers
Some questions ask for a current President, Vice President, Speaker, Chief Justice, governor, senator or representative. These answers can change. Location questions depend on where the applicant lives.
CitizenReady deliberately links those cards to the live USCIS updates and official congressional directories rather than freezing a potentially stale officeholder name.
04
65/20 special consideration
An applicant who is at least 65 and has been a lawful permanent resident for at least 20 years receives special consideration for civics and may take the test in their language with an interpreter. Study only the USCIS questions marked for 65/20 in the version that applies.
This is separate from the 50/20 and 55/15 English exceptions. Those applicants still take civics unless another waiver applies.
05
A practical study sequence
Start with a diagnostic mock, drill the weakest topics, practise oral recall, then repeat a full mock. Use the reading and writing lab separately because the English test has a different format.
- Say every answer aloud; exact wording is not always required, but the meaning must match an accepted answer.
- Review changing answers during the week of the interview.
- Use the 65/20 filter only if you actually qualify.
- Treat practice scores as study signals, not a guarantee.
